What is Sports?

Sports

Sports have been part of the human experience for centuries. They have provided a sense of competition, entertainment and release from everyday chores. They have also served as a source of social stability and religious worship.

Definition of Sport

A human activity involving physical exertion and skill with elements of competition or social participation governed by rules formally established through organisations. It can also be a source of esteem for people who have achieved success in their sport.

In most competitive sporting events, the result is determined by a combination of objective measurements (e.g. scoring a goal or crossing a line first) and subjective measures such as technical performance, artistic impression and skill. Generally, the result of a game is assigned by a panel of judges who can award points to the winners or penalize the losers.

Sports also promote certain moral values, such as dedication, patience and the importance of time management. These virtues are essential to good sportsmanship and should be cultivated as early as possible. Those who enjoy sports also tend to be more disciplined in their daily lives, and they perform better at school or work than those who do not.
